Tonight we wethered our two billy kids (Flash Gordito & Frijole), just before it rained. We used a Burdizzo, a beautiful tool crafted in Italy.

"The emasculatome, Burdizzo, method involves a clamp-like tool which crushes the spermatic cord and blood vessels leading to the testicles."

Holding the billy in his lap, our kids almost nuzzle my husband as I feel for the cord. They are concerned as this is not a usual position of goat and human. Goats like to have all four on the floor.

I position the tool and squeeze for a slow count of 1-2-3-4-5...6-7. 
Release. Baby goat screams reach deep. They stand around stunned for a minute, then find mom for a drink.

Now the boys can grow and thrive without the enhancement of testosterone.

Loss is real.

These tiny beings that become a part of your daily world, in a blink of an eye, are no more. No more scratchin, huntin, peckin, cluckin, layin. No longer living.

We have been raising poultry for 8 years and recall all our dead chickens with fondness, by name and memories of their personality and manner.

So tonight, we will gather up 4 of our flock to be relocated to Pecos, a lovely place to be a chicken...1 layer, 2 young hens, 1 young rooster, all born on our farm.

We have never had a predator infiltrate our barnyard. We have layers of security, the inner most being the 4 male llamas who live with our 10 goats and 50-some chickens. The outer most being the property fence, with our dogs patrolling in between.

We have witnessed the alertness and strength that comes from our llama guards. They are ever aware of potential danger or strange dogs or anything unusual.

The llamas keep it real, on their own sweet terms.
